Thank you very much for your comment! My younger daughter is now 4 years old and you are totally right with the 3-year-old benchmark and the local language battle. We moved to the United States a year ago when she was three and she picked up English so fast it was unreal. And now we are still struggling for her to keep her Turkish and Dutch. Consistency is indeed the key, but it does get really difficult once we get out of the house! However, your experience is very encouraging for us to keep up the 'fight':) Thanks, again!

Hi,

Nice article. We have 3 boys aged from 6 to 12. My wife is German and I am Irish. Initially we lived in Germany and that is where the boys were born. We moved to Italy 4 1/2 years ago. The boys have always spoken English to me, German to their mother and now Italian at school. It has worked out very well. The local Italians say they can't make them out from any other Italian child from the area. Same goes in Germany or in Ireland although for some reason the oldest one has picked up an American twang along the way! At home the language switches from German to English depending what is going on. My wife speaks excellent English and I speak excellent German. All of this is no "no brainer". My top tips are:

1. Be consistent
2. When your first child reaches around 3 they will resist speaking the language that is not local- you need to be very strict at this stage and refuse to give in to the child by speaking the local language. If you loose this battle, it is all over. Our experience was that this was only an issue with the oldest and the younger children did not resist as they knew no other situation.
3. Re-enforcing with TV is a great way to increase vocab
4. Bring them back to your home country when you can and get them playing with kids their own age
5. Make it fun and natural to speak a few languages.

Our kids now find it cool that they speak 3 languages and it is really great for them on hols to have access to German, English and Italian speakers. Our oldest is doing Spansh at school now and loves it.

I enjoy you because of all of the efforts on this website. Betty loves conducting internet research and it's easy to see why. A lot of people hear all relating to the dynamic method you convey good things by means of the blog and inspire contribution from other ones on the concept while my child is now discovering a lot of things. Take advantage of the remaining portion of the new year. You are always carrying out a brilliant job.
